:: Mia Olson:

A Berklee faculty member since 1996, Mia Olson has chaired the Harmony department and is currently a professor in the Woodwind department. She has taught a variety of courses including harmony, writing skills, jazz flute lab, private flute lessons, ensembles, and basic keyboard.

As a professional flutist, Olson has performed concerts around the world and has played in many film soundtracks, live radio broadcasts, and numerous ecordings. She plays in diverse styles, including jazz, classical, Latin, Brazilian, Indian, and contemporary rock. Olson has produced three of her own CDs: Meditations in a Contemporary World, Sombrio, and Images.

Olson received a Bachelors in Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Diploma from Berklee College of Music, and a Masters in Music from New England Conservatory.

Mia Olson is a multimedia expressionist who expresses herself through, music, painting, photography, and yoga. Mia was born into an artistic family. Her father is an interior designer, her mother is a graphic designer, and her brother is a singer/songwriter. She went on to pursue music as a profession and received a B.M. in classical flute performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Diploma in jazz flute performance from Berklee College of Music, and a M.M. in contemporary improvisation from New England Conservatory. Mia also continued to pursue her education in visual arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Her painting and music have been evolving in tandem. When she was younger, she would draw and paint very realistically. In her music, she was classically trained, reading precisely from the page. During her years in Madison, she started to branch out playing in a Latin/jazz band where she was expected to improvise. This was the beginning of her exploration into tapping into the flow of energy and free expression. Her painting has now evolved to become a visual representation of this flow of energy, as her music has become the sonic representation.

As a painter, she now prefers to paint abstracts by tapping into this flow of energy and seeing where it takes her. As a professional flutist, she plays with various artists in a number of diverse styles including jazz, classical, Latin, Brazilian, Indian and contemporary rock. She has performed concerts around the world and has played in many film soundtracks, live radio broadcasts, and numerous recordings. Her latest CD, Meditations in a Contemporary World, is a two flute CD recorded with Matt Marvuglio on alto flute. It was improvised in the same way as her art, by being fully present in the moment and following this flow of energy.

In addition to playing the flute and painting, Mia is also a certified Professional Level Kripalu Yoga Teacher and Reiki Master. She has developed and teaches Yoga For Musicians classes at Berklee College of Music where she is a Professor in the Woodwind Department. Mia has presented Yoga for Musicians seminars for other music organizations and music festivals around the world, including the Costa Rica International Jazz Festival, Panamá Jazz Festival, Jazz Festival at the Conservatory of Music in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Seminario & Encuentro Internacional De Jazz in Xalapa, Mexico, the Greater Boston Flute Association, and the Zeltsman Marimba Festival.
